By offering contract extensions, the Detroit Lions have been actively maintaining their core players. They signed Penei Sewell to a hefty contract that would keep him on the squad until 2029, locked up Amon-Ra St. Brown through 2028, and signed Jared Goff to a massive deal that will keep him through 2027 with an option in 2028.
Who, though, is next in line?
We asked Lions fans that question in our most recent SB Nation Reacts survey, and the answers are in.
Given that Alim McNeill is without a doubt one of the Lions’ top three defenders and has the potential to become a superstar, it is simple to understand the case for extending his contract. As I mentioned in the accompanying piece, the only compelling argument against McNeill’s extension is his possible cost:
“Note that the top 13 defensive tackles averaged at least $21 million per season, and the top 20 averaged over $15 million.”
Check out a few justifications offered by readers of Pride of Detroit in the original companion article’s comment area. To make responses easier to read, some have been slightly altered.
MystDragoon: “The defense’s Amon-Ra St. Brown is Alim. His adaptability allows for varied game plans and provides opportunities for other players who are more efficient to earn playing time. He comes next.
“Please, Alim McNeill,” said Sprtn 66. That year, my draft infatuation was him. The defense is starting to play respectably now, and I don’t want to start losing key players.
positivebob: “Alim. This man will be this year’s Chris Jones of destruction.
JayBDet: “Leim and Decker, before they become even more costly.”
It is noteworthy to mention that although people support McNeill for the upcoming contract, Decker received a respectable number of votes as well. As one of this team’s leaders, Decker is nearing the end of a large contract, so the stability the Lions would obtain from signing him would be priceless.
For more, let’s return to the fans.
Decker, says SwordOfIfeatu. Gio will need some time to settle in as the offensive lineman is crucial to this club.
Decker, for sure, says DetSports. As devoted as a puppy, he hasn’t let money get the better of him. and very gifted musician who performs while in discomfort.
Big Deck: Leonine Pride. He stated he still had a lot of gas left in his tank with one year to go. If any Lions player is worthy of an SB victory, it’s TD68.
Elsonian II: “Decker.” With the longest contract and the most underappreciated player? Manu has a longer learning leash after two years. Because of his loyalty and tenure, Decker also deserves it.
