The retained list of Sheffield Wednesday was recently revealed, and supporters were surprised by a few names.
The decision to allow George Byers to go this summer was one of the biggest surprises; he spent a season on loan with League One team Blackpool. Byers’ contract ends next month.
In other news, supporters were taken aback to learn that goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, who lost his spot in the starting lineup to James Beadle on loan, was being given a new contract.
Along with other players, Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, and Di’Shon Bernard signed new contracts. Danny Rohl and company wanted to clear the decks while maintaining their current caliber.
Reece James is another player whose name will be revealed next month. The left-back played in just one league game in 2024 and only eight times during the 2023â24 Championship campaign.
However, the 30-year-old, who just signed a permanent contract with Sheffield Wednesday last summer, is now scheduled to speak with a rival South Yorkshire team of the Owls.
“Set for talks” with Rotherham United is Reece James.
According to reports, James will hold discussions with Rotherham United, who placed last in the Championship standings at the end of the 2023â24 season.
However, the Millers have already signed three new players this summer under the direction of new manager Steve Evans, including Jonson Clarke-Harris on a free transfer.
And now, according to journalist Alex Miller, Rotherham may sign James, who is reportedly “set for talks” with the team. James is reportedly also being considered by other League One and League Two teams.
According to Miller, Byers is also a target for Rotherham United, and English Football League teams are also showing a lot of interest in him.
Had Sheffield Wednesday stayed in James Reece
Fans and even James himself didn’t think he would have had as much fun with the season as he did.
In League One in 2022â2023 he made 28 appearances, assisted three goals and scoring one. His inventive and dynamic play at left back helped him gain popularity among supporters.
But Rohl was obviously not partial to him. James might be more effective as a left defender, but the Owls typically deployed a five-at-the-back lineup with Marvin Johnson as the left wing-back.
It appears that James is not a Rohl-type player because Johnson or Akin Famewo was still preferred in the games where Rohl used a back-four.
However, he proved in League One with the Owls that he is a real contributor at that level, so joining Rotherham, who is quickly becoming a serious contender in League One, may be a wise option.
Additionally, the Millers’ chances of success in the upcoming campaign will only increase with the addition of James, a seasoned full-back.
