SAD NEWS: The Maple Leafs Lost A Prominent Player…

For supporters of the Toronto Maple Leafs, this is the worst time of year. Since the team’s elimination a month ago, we’ve had to watch other teams—some of which feature former Maple Leafs players—go farther in the playoffs. It doesn’t help that 24 other teams experienced comparable or worse outcomes.

That makes sense because clubs are most likely instructed by the league not to divert spectators’ attention from on-ice action. Until the Florida Panthers or the Edmonton Oilers raise the Cup, probably nothing significant will occur. The series won’t finish until June 24th if it goes seven games.

We have to entertain ourselves in the interim with a plethora of fanciful rumors of who might be where and what. Mitch Marner, the newest whipping child in Toronto, has reportedly been linked to about (cleverly, of course) 31 different teams. Other than that, not much is being said about John Tavares’ tax problems, which may have a lasting impact on expensive players who play in Canada.

Craig Berube is already old news and hasn’t accomplished much.
Craig Berube’s hiring has been thoroughly investigated and is no longer news. We wait till someone raises the Cup. Four days remain until the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, which could signal the end of the season. Free Agency kicks off on July 1. The NHL will make its 2024–25 schedule announcement around those days.

For a Maple Leafs fan, these must be the worst days of the season—the gap between the team’s most recent game and when the action starts off-ice. When will a significant event occur? It will take some time.
