Whether the shooting happened inside or outside the establishment was not immediately disclosed by the police. Later on Friday afternoon, authorities intended to hold a news conference regarding the shooting.
About 3,200 people live in the city of Fordyce, which is 65 miles south of Little Rock.
A video that was shared on social media showed several gunshots being heard while at least one person was seen lying in the parking lot.
Numerous bullet holes could be seen in the grocery store window in pictures taken by TV reporters who were on the site. At least one medical helicopter was observed landing close to the site while local and state agencies were visible in the camera footage.
Governor of Arkansas Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she has received information on the shooting.
On the social media site X, Ms. Sanders wrote, “I am grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their swift and heroic action to save lives.” “I’m praying for the victims and everyone who is affected by this.”
When David Rodriguez, 58, heard what he thought to be fireworks coming from a neighboring vendor’s stand, he pulled into his neighborhood gas station in Fordyce to fill up his car.
He reported hearing a couple small pops.
Then he noticed one person on the ground and others fleeing into the parking lot from the Mad Butcher grocery store. Before the gunshots got more intense, he started to record a video with his phone.
He claimed that after the cops arrived, there was a lot of gunshots and ambulances arrived. “The gunfire just kept coming.”
