BREAKING NEWS: Following today’s protest, Nick Saban has officially called for a pay cut for his advising role… ESPN

To present, there aren’t many specifics about Nick Saban’s new position with the Alabama sports department. At least one element about the former Crimson Tide’s new remuneration for his advising role became clear about six months after he announced his retirement.

As per a document that AL.com was able to obtain through a public records request, his new position would pay him $500,000 year, which will be split into $41,666 monthly installments. According to the document, the pay grade covers a 40.0-hour work week, but it started in March.

The surprising thing is that Saban’s base pay has increased. Last year, his yearly compensation as head coach was $305,000, with talent fees and bonuses pushing the total into the eight figures. His final large salary was $858,716 on February 29, which was greater than his successor’s remuneration for the same month. On the last day of February, new Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer received his first full monthly paycheck since joining the team in mid-January, totaling $834,978.

With a total value of $87 million over eight years, DeBoer’s first contract will pay $10 million in Year 1. After retiring, Saban continues to work beyond his position at Alabama. In addition, he is employed by ESPN, where he joined the College GameDay cast as an analyst. His contract and pay are exempt from open records regulations.
