A Legend Goes Home at 81: Billionaire Atlanta falcons co-founder’ Arthur M. Blank Passes on @81…

On the morning of September 5, 2024, the world lost a visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist, and sports leader as Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and co-owner of the Atlanta Falcons, passed away at the age of 81. A beloved figure in both the business and sports communities, Blank’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Arthur Blank was born on September 27, 1942, in Flushing, New York. After graduating from Babson College with a degree in business administration, he began his career in the retail industry. However, it was in 1978 when Blank, along with Bernie Marcus, co-founded The Home Depot, that he truly made his mark. The concept was revolutionary: a warehouse-style home improvement store offering a vast selection of products under one roof at competitive prices. This model became the cornerstone of the modern retail industry, and by the early 2000s, Home Depot had grown into a multi-billion-dollar empire, making Blank one of the most respected figures in business.

In 2002, Arthur Blank made a significant leap into the world of sports when he purchased the Atlanta Falcons, an NFL franchise that had seen sporadic success over the years. Blank’s commitment to building a competitive and community-focused team quickly became evident. Under his ownership, the Falcons reached the Super Bowl in 2017 and built one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017. His vision extended beyond just football, as he also helped to launch Atlanta United FC, the city’s Major League Soccer team, which won the MLS Cup in just its second season in 2018.

While Blank’s business and sports endeavors were monumental, it was his commitment to philanthropy that defined much of his later years. Through the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, established in 1995, he donated millions to causes such as education, youth development, the environment, and healthcare. Blank’s philosophy of “doing the right thing” extended into his work with the community, and his legacy of giving back continues to impact lives across Georgia and beyond.

Arthur Blank leaves behind a remarkable legacy as a titan of business, a beloved sports owner, and a humanitarian. He will be remembered not only for his successes but also for his enduring commitment to improving the lives of others. The world has lost a legend, but his impact will resonate for generations.
