Jayson Tatum has inked a new contract extension for more than $300 million, placing him among the NBA’s best earners.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation who talked to The Associated Press on Monday, the top player for the Boston Celtics has agreed to a five-year contract worth $314 million, guaranteeing his spot on the club that won the NBA championship.
The five-time All-Star will remain in Boston starting in the 2025–2026 season and continuing through the 2029–2030 campaign. The Athletic and ESPN were the first to report on the deal, which has not yet been formally revealed. This will make Tatum’s supermax deal the biggest in NBA history, breaking Jaylen Brown’s record from the previous season.
Tatum shot 47% from the floor last season and averaged 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game.
He was named to the All-NBA first team for the third straight year thanks to his outstanding play. Tatum’s playoff statistics increased to 25 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. He had some memorable games, including as his 31 points in the Game 5 championship-clinching victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
Tatum will compete with the American men’s basketball team this summer in an attempt to build on his 2021 Olympic gold medal.
Reports that Celtics starting point guard Derrick White had also agreed to a four-year, $126 million agreement surfaced at the same time as Tatum’s extension was announced. All five of Boston’s starters—Tatum, Brown, White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis—now have contracts that go at least through the 2025–2026 campaign.
